Woodruff Academy Attendance Policy
Required days: 170 campus school days are required including full participation in off-site field trips; individual, school, and family service projects; and/or paid work experience (reserved for high school students only). However, a student's paid and/or volunteer work is to be considered second in importance to their formal education and training through WA.
Tardy: When a student arrives more than 1 minute late for a class the student is considered tardy. All tardies are recorded in 15-minute increments, rounded up. For example, one (1) minute late is considered fifteen (15) minutes late, sixteen (16) minutes late is considered thirty (30) minutes late, thirty-one (31) minutes late is considered forty-five (45) minutes late, and forty-six (46) minutes late is considered one (1) hour late. One hour's worth of recorded tardies will require an hour of class made up on a Friday during the same week/month.
Minimum days and school work required:
- A student may not miss more than 16 hours of teacher supervised instruction per quarter in addition to turning in their work on time with the work completed properly and in a good quality condition in order for the student to receive credit for the respective quarter.
- A total of no more than eight absent days per year are allowed. If the student knows he or she is going out of town, he or she is expected to complete his or her assignments ahead of the departure. If the work is not submitted ahead of time and submitted in good condition, the said student may not receive full credit for the respective assignments.
- A student's excessive absences and/or late quality schoolwork submitted to their respective teacher(s) in a untimely manner may result in a lack of promotion to the following grade and/or impair a student’s graduation from high school. This lack of promotion/graduation policy is particularly true in regard to the credit hours and/or quality of academic work completed and submitted by a high school student. A high school student must complete a minimum of six required “credit hours” per academic year during a typical four year period to receive his or her high school diploma/graduation.
- A student must attend a minimum of four instructional hours per day to receive full credit for attending that day of school.
100% attendance: A students attending school for 100% of the required time will receive special recognition at the end of the year.
We urge parents to assist their student in successfully meeting the goal of arriving at school on time and attending school 100% of the 170 days. The attitude of the parents taking attendance seriously indicates to the student the importance of education and the building of character. We realize when a child is sick and contagious, they must be absent. However, a doctor's excusal is required and the doctor’s excusal must be submitted upon the student’s return to school. If a student has a low immune system and/or if the student is inclined to miss school often, parents might consider a home school program offered through their county in order to avoid required attendance obligations.
